We work with our weaver community in rural areas of East Java. A little darling village called Karangrejo Village is the home to many talents, and we are honored to be part of them. One of our most valuable fabrics made by the community is Dobby, a delicate fabric with unique patterns made by the heartfelt and talented hands of experienced weavers.
Before the Jacquard, the Dobby loom introduced the concept of “programming” a pattern. Early Dobby looms used a series of wooden pegs or bars (called “lags”) that acted like a physical code. When a peg hits the mechanism, it lifts a specific set of threads. This was a direct conceptual ancestor to the binary “on/off” logic used in later machines. In the growing field of textile recycling and sustainable manufacturing, Dobby looms are frequently used to process recycled yarns. Since recycled fibers (like our very own Pabtex) can sometimes have varied textures, the sturdy, mechanical nature of a Dobby loom is ideal for creating durable, high-quality fabrics.
Holding on to our roots of sustainability, we believe that fashion has moved away from “visual excess” and has circled back to the things that matter: environmental consciousness, a sense of timeless and seasonless taste of fashion, and purpose. People make and buy clothes in hope for them to last.
