By 2024, Pable had been on the road to a sustainable circular economy for four years. At that point, we wanted to bring innovation to our business. We hadn’t yet fully explored the potential of the Indonesian weaving industry, so we focused on that: unlocking potential while creating innovation.
At that time, Pable already had our beloved fabrics, made by the skilled weavers of Karangrejo Village – Sekir, Malet, Suri, Lungsi, and Pakan. Each had its own unique strengths. Then we turned to Dobby; a fabric that revolutionized weaving in the 19th century. Dobby fabric dates back to 1840, when weavers discovered a new method of incorporating patterns into woven fabric using a special and unique machine, the Dobby loom. So, Dobby fabric is actually a long-time player in the weaving world.
Pable revisited Karangrejo Village, intending to bring novelty to the old book. Our idea was warmly welcomed by Pak Udin, a weaver who still upholds traditional values through his idealism of using traditional looms in the fast-paced and dynamic modern world. The 4-pedal weaving technique, he labeled “teknik timbul,” is a rare hereditary weaving technique of his family in Karangrejo Village.
This idea results in a unique fabric inspired by the authentic Dobby fabric. Instead of our regular plain woven cloth, you get beautiful patterns of rectangles and dots to spice up your sustainable wardrobe. Our Dobby comes in many shades: gray, green, white, brown, yellow, and our best-selling pink. All of these shades follow Pable’s rules —no artificial dyes, purely derived from the color-sorting process of textile waste.
Due to its high level of difficulty, our Dobby is a product loved by many. This is also an effort to appreciate the craftsmanship, love, and care of our weavers. After Dobby, we continued to push our limits, resulting in the Tailor Series collection of Dobby, Herringbone, Houndstooth, and Twill, which you can see on Pable’s Shopee or Tokopedia. Each of our fabrics not only embodies hope for a more sustainable future but also brings the stories of the extraordinary weavers who guide Pable’s journey closer to you.
